Norwegian music is very diverse. We have our own style of folk music, but our biggest export is death metal and black metal (also known for burning of churches in Norway, sad stuff…). In the popular music, what the radio stations play all over the world we are not so much represented. Of course we have some artists that you might know about, and here is a short list.
– A-ha, pop (from the 80ies and until now, last farewell concert in December 2010)
– Donkeyboy, pop
– Maria Mena, pop
– Marit Larsen, pop
– Alexander Rybak, pop/folk (won Eurovision 2009)
– Madcon, rap/pop (the artists behind the Eurovision 2010 flash mob dance)
– Sissel Kyrkjebø, folk
– Sondre Lerche, pop
– Lene Marlin, pop
– Wenche Myhre, pop/folk
– Kurt Nilsen, pop/country (winner of World Idol)
If you have someone in mind that should be added, please leave a comment.
Pingback: Celebrities | You ask about Norway…
Hi there 🙂
I just found my way here via your postcrossing profile. Just wanted to say greetings from Finland (and from a girl who’s crazy about Norway)! I’m studying Nordic languages at the university of Helsinki and Iäve been thinking of studying in Norway at some point, too. Anyway, what I actually meant to comment: No mention of black metal here? 😀 I think that’s quite well-known, too, if not due to music, then at least due burning churches 😛
Oh. Yeah. People still remember that one…
The guy that was “most” responsible for the burning of churches is now released from prison. Hopefully he will keep his matches safe and concentrate on the music.
Jaga jazzist and norwegian jazz in general is pretty famous amongst jazz-lovers
I know so very little about jazz, especially Norwegian jazz. But I have of course heard of Jaga =)
